Germany was once the leader in the climate protection index of German Watch, CAN Europa and the New Climate Institute, but this year it is only enough for 27th place, behind many other European countries such as Romania or Slovakia.

Behind Romania and Slovakia

Germany is behind Romania, India and Slovakia in the 2019 climate protection index. Sweden gets the best rating, followed by Morocco and Lithuania.

No gold, silver or bronze

No country was able to achieve first, second or third place in the climate protection index. Sweden takes fourth place. Iran, Saudi Arabia and the USA are the worst performers.

Who will be judged?

56 individual states and the EU are assessed, which together generate more than 90 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Why is the bad performance?

According to the initiators of the climate protection index, Germany is so far behind because it is still one of the largest consumers of lignite. If this changed, Germany would be high in the index.

What is valued?

Evaluation criteria are progress in saving CO2 and a total of 14 indicators such as greenhouse gases, renewable energies, energy consumption or climate policy.

EU still good

The EU as a whole comes in 16th place and is still in the good range. The point of greenhouse gases is rated less well in the EU, especially climate policy.

China is improving

China is the country with the largest population in the world and produces the most greenhouse gas emissions. However, it climbed from place 41 to place 33, as these did not increase from 2014 to 2016. If this were the case in 2017/2018, China would slide down again next time.

USA in the back

The USA is in second to last place in terms of emissions. However, the authors point out that cities and individual states are pursuing an ambitious climate policy.

What is the climate protection index for?

A study just showed that the consequences of global warming are even more dramatic than previously thought. The index is intended to lead to transparency in international climate policy, in order to increase the pressure of civil society on the countries that do not show any effort, although there is already an spread of infectious diseases as a result of global warming. There are already increasing health problems due to climate change, and the index is intended to make countries visible as role models to counteract them.

What are the criteria based on?

80 percent of the evaluations are about emission trends and emissions levels. 20 percent is based on analyzes by 350 experts surveyed on the climate policy of the specific countries. You can find more information here. (Dr. Utz Anhalt)
