What does breakfast do before exercise?

Eating breakfast before exercise can result in more carbohydrates being burned during exercise and faster digestion after exercise.

In their current study, scientists from the University of Bath and the University of Birmingham found that breakfast before exercise increased digestion. The doctors published the results of their study in the English-language journal "The American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism".

What was examined?

For their new study, the experts examined the effects of breakfast and fasting overnight on the subsequent one-hour cycle. They also ran a test in which participants rested for three hours after breakfast. In addition, it was analyzed how it worked if the subjects ate breakfast with porridge and milk two hours before the training. After training or resting, the researchers then checked the blood sugar and muscle glycogen levels of the twelve healthy male volunteers who took the tests.

Effects on the body

The experts discovered that eating breakfast increased the rate at which the body burned carbohydrates during exercise and the rate at which the body consumed the digested and metabolized foods that were eaten after exercise. This is the first study to investigate how pre-workout breakfast affects post-workout meals, study author Dr. Javier Gonzalez from the University of Bath. It was found that breakfast before training compared to not eating breakfast increases the speed at which carbohydrates are digested, absorbed and metabolized, which are only taken in after training, the expert adds.

It has also been observed that breakfast before training increases the burning of carbohydrates during training and that these carbohydrates come not only from the breakfast you just ate, but also from carbohydrates that are stored in our muscles as glycogen, the scientists say. This increase in muscle glycogen use could explain why blood sugar levels dropped faster after lunch if breakfast was taken before training.

More research is needed

The study suggests that pre-workout breakfast prepares the body for rapid storage of the food we eat after workout. The long-term effects are still unclear, additional studies on this topic have to be carried out, the authors explain. There is a clear need for further research that more closely analyzes the effects of pre-exercise food intake, for example on overweight participants who may have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
